Students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology toppled a piano off the roof of their dorm, sending it plummeting six stories and smacking into a piano on the ground. Spectators grabbed souvenirs like piano keys and strings.

The popular tradition marks the last day that classes can be dropped without them showing up on students’ transcripts.

A British recipe for a special pie for Queen Elizabeth II that dates back to the Middle Ages will have one key ingredient from North America this year.

The city of Gloucester, which will present the lamprey pie to the monarch as part of her June Diamond Jubilee festivities, asked the Great Lakes Fishery Commission to ship over the eel-like critters because they are a protected species in England.

The commission sent two pounds of frozen lampreys from Lake Huron.

The world’s most advanced solar-powered plane is taking off for the Mediterranean next month.

The Swiss team that built the Solar Impulse says the jumbo jet-sized prototype plane will make the 2,500-kilometer trip from Switzerland to Morocco.

The plane has been to France and Belgium — and the team has plans for a round-the-world flight in 2014.
